St Olave's Grammar School

St. Olave's has 124 places for boys at year 7 and these are so heavily contested that potential pupils must first sit the School’s Selective Eligibility Test (SET).

This stage 1 test comprises exams in English comprehension, Logic (verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning), Mathematics and English questions. This first stage is designed to determine whether or not candidates are of the School’s required standard to move forward to stage 2.

This stage 1 test will take place in September and those pupils who pass stage 1 are invited to sit the next 11+ exam at stage two.

Stage 2 will take place before the end of the Autumn term and the second stage comprises tests in English and Mathematics.

The tests are very competitive and the scores are standardised and then aggregated, together with the SET marks, to allow a ranking of candidates.

The first one hundred and twenty four, in rank order, will be offered places. In the event of aggregate standardised scores being tied for two or more candidates the final rank order will be determined using performance in the Mathematics paper, then, if required, the creative writing, then the English multiple choice, then the SET.

Newstead Wood School

Newstead Wood is an Academy Girls’ Selective School situated on the outskirts of the London Borough of Bromley. The School is always heavily over-subscribed.

There are 160 places for entry to Year 7. Often there will be 5 applications for each place so competition is very high. As the school is heavily over-subscribed the school apply the following criterion:-

Girls who have been ranked as one of the top scorers in the selection tests.

Applications will be considered in three groups:

Group 1 Girls who live within a 9 mile radius of the school.

Group 2 Girls of a member of Newstead Wood staff who has been employed at the school for two or more years at the time at which the application for admission is made and who live outside the 9 mile radius.

Group 3 Girls who do not meet the above conditions.

In practice, given the level of over-subscription to the School, no places have ever been offered to applicants from Group 3
