About the School
Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School is a forward-looking, selective state school with academy status and has an outstanding record of promoting high achievement.
Whilst they have achieved Outstanding judgements in their last four Ofsted inspections, they regularly analyse performance and seek new ways to enhance learning opportunities for students.
With around 1012 students on roll, including 281 in the Sixth Form, they are in a position to offer a wide curriculum; including three languages in Year 7. The vast majority of students make very good progress and staff use a range of data measures in school to set challenging targets. Behaviour and attendance are excellent at LGGS and the girls are highly motivated, keen and enthusiastic.
A major strength of Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School is its pastoral structure. Students are very well supported by Form Tutors, Heads of Key Stage, Learning Mentors and a Well-being Coordinator. Staff promote emotional and physical well-being and currently have the best range of sporting opportunities ever on offer at Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School. the Duke of Edinburgh programme, which builds resilience and team work, continues to grow very successfully. New leadership initiatives in Key Stage 4 encourage pupils to reflect on their own personal qualities and achievements as well as celebrate their individuality and talents. Other projects in school are designed to improve well-being and develop resilience, teaching our pupils to reflect and learn from setbacks and to always aim high.
Whilst the school is confined to a small campus in the centre of the city, they make full use of every available space. The school has recently benefited from a number of improvements to its facilities including a purpose built Sixth Form Centre. As an International School they value links with a range of schools in Europe and further afield. Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School currently have links with schools in France, Germany, Japan, Spain, and China.
School intake into Year 7 has increased to 140. Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School is heavily oversubscribed and admission is by an entrance test. On entry, girls are placed in five forms and are taught in forms for most subjects whilst in Years 7 and 8. Sixth Form students organise a whole host of events for younger students including the annual Performing Arts and Music Festivals. Each year, Lancaster Girls’ Grammar School recruits around fifty new students to Year 12 and almost every student continues into the Sixth Form after Year 11. Whilst Maths, Biology and Chemistry are the most popular A-levels, Arts, Languages and Humanities subjects are also common choices for the students.
