11+ Exam Spellings List
11 Plus spelling and vocabulary lists can be found all over the place and not one of these 11+ lists will cover all possible words that may occur in the 11+ exam. Our list covers a wide range of words that we feel may be a useful list of relevant words that can appear in an 11+ English or Verbal Reasoning exam.
The 11+ requires your child to have a wide vocabulary and be able to spell quickly and correctly so that they can work quickly through the difficult questions that they will have to answer.
A good vocabulary is essential for success in the 11+ Exam.
Why is a spelling and vocabulary list important?
A list such as this is important because it will include words that have been used in earlier exams or words which 11+ test publishers have used in their tests. Some of this vocabulary will be words that have been used by both of the major 11+ exam publishers ie GL and CEM. Our list also contains some difficult words that a child may have met as part of their daily teaching but at the same time these are not common words.
Some of the words in the list are words that are often spelt wrongly or the meaning may not be too easy for a child to understand.
After you have scrolled through the list you can print it, using the button, and keep it as a useful resource for reference or teaching and learning.
How do children improve their vocabulary?
This may seem a simple question and really the answer is quite straight forward. Children develop their vocabulary by reading extensively and across a wide genre of material. These genres will include fiction and non-fiction. Reading will make familiar words become common knowledge to a child while at the same time reading will teach the child a range of new and different words. Try to encourage your child to read by introducing them to texts that they enjoy.
