Book 3 in a series of five 11+ (VR) Verbal Reasoning Papers by Learning Together. Using these tests will increase the ability of your child to attack the verbal reasoning section of their 11plus exams.

Having worked their way through books 1 and 2 their skill level should be increasing and they should now be finding techniques to ensure that they approach Verbal Reasoning questions in a systematic manner. Our books are recommended by many London based tutoring companies as suitable preparation for the 11-plus exam.

Book 3 contains a range of questions and related exercises to improve your child’s abilities and understanding levels of several different question types including: -

Add a letter to make four words.

rop (?) ver  AND  tre (?) at

In this question type you must add one letter that will create four new words, the same letter must be used in both sets of brackets and must complete the word in front of the brackets and the word after the bracket. Preliminary exercises involve adding a letter to create two words.

Reading information or Logical Deduction.

Julie is taller than John but smaller than Joan

List the children starting with the tallest.

In this question type you are asked to read information which is given to you in a variety of formats. You are then asked to deduce (work out) the answers from the information that you have been given. These questions can be presented in many ways. Drawing a table to put the information into maybe helpful.

Find the Next Letter in This Series.

Find the next letter in this series.

Y              A             C             E              ( ? )

In this question type you are asked to insert the next letter or letters into the series. Writing out the alphabet very quickly can be very helpful.

Goat is to Kid as Horse is to Foal – Word connections.

finger is to ( point   hand   nail )  as toe is to  ( big   foot   heel )

In this question type you are asked to choose two words, one from each set of brackets that will complete the sentence in the most sensible way. There are many possible “word connections” and this method sheet offers some possible variations that may be experienced in the 11+ and a method of approaching this question type.

Number Series.

9              11           13           15           ( ? )
Find the next number in this series.

In this question type you are asked to insert the next number or numbers into the series. Writing out a line of numbers such as 1 - 20 can be very helpful as it may help you see the series.
(Of course, this may not be practical if the numbers are very large.)

Compound words.

In each question below a word from the first set of brackets joins one word from the second set of brackets to make a new word.

( late   farm   time )                     ( over   field   yard )

In this question type you are asked to choose one small word from each of two sets of brackets that will join to make one larger word. This new word is known as a compound word. Your child should revise this question type and improve their method to tackle a compound words question.

There many different versions of verbal reasoning question – some educationalists suggest that there may be more than 30 different forms of verbal reasoning question.

Online 11plus forums  can be a useful source of 11+ information but be cautious of taking the forum posts as being completely accurate – always check details with your chosen school or local education authority.

This verbal reasoning book affords more preparation for your child’s 11plus exams or private school entrance exam. The questions in this book are comparable questions to those found in verbal reasoning questions set by local authorities or private schools. It contains a range of questions like those used in the CEM 11plus exam.

Different and more challenging questions are introduced.

This book contains 5 tests each containing 85 Verbal Reasoning questions and detachable answers are included.

A time of 50 minutes is recommended for each test allowing preparation time akin to the actual eleven plus exam. A child practicing these tests in the security of their home environment will be at a distinct advantage when sitting the real exam for their chosen grammar or private school.

The introductory advice contained in this Verbal Reasoning Book encourages the involvement of parents to explain the answers to their child. Parental support is crucial to a child’s success in their schoolwork. Preparing for the eleven plus exam is no different.

Our How to do Verbal Reasoning book gives worked examples and practice questions in many verbal reasoning question types. This skills and practice book will assist you in schooling your own child in different approaches to Verbal Reasoning questions and empower you to help them understand some of the more difficult question types.
